Permeable pavers: will they drain your driveway?
Will permeable pavers solve my driveway drainage problem?
Yes, if the paving, stone base and soil or designed outlet can receive the water together; changing the surface alone is insufficient. As of Nov 2026, permeable pavers let runoff pass through openings into the layers below, while a channel drain collects water flowing across a sealed surface.
Evidence: US Environmental Protection Agency; Philadelphia Water Department. Researched Nov 4, 2026; original rate-source dates are listed below.
Check the ground below the paving
Ask what happens after water passes through the joints. A permeable surface over a base that cannot store or release water leaves the drainage question unanswered; the soil, groundwater and any underdrain belong in the proposal before you choose a paver color.
Philadelphia’s porous-surface manual separates infiltration designs from systems that need another outlet. Its requirements apply locally, but the distinction is useful when reviewing a driveway proposal elsewhere: request the soil assessment and the proposed drainage section, rather than assuming an open joint proves infiltration.
Compare infiltration with surface interception
| Finding | Useful approach | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Runoff starts on paving you plan to replace | Consider permeable paving with a designed base. | The surface and buried layers must work together. |
| Runoff crosses paving you want to keep | Compare a grated channel and a suitable outlet. | An inlet moves water; it does not make the receiving ground absorb it. |
| Water arrives from an uphill area | Assess the incoming route before choosing paving. | A driveway surface is not an unlimited receiving basin. |
The driveway channel-drain guide covers surface interception. If runoff can reach a separate planted area, compare rain garden suitability before replacing otherwise usable paving.
Specify the whole pavement build-up
Require a section drawing that names the paver system, joint material, bedding, stone reservoir and soil interface. Where an underdrain or overflow is proposed, ask where it ends and how it remains accessible; an unseen pipe drawn toward a boundary is not a complete outlet detail.
Separate removal of old paving, excavation, spoil handling, drainage layers, edge restraints and reinstatement in competing quotes. This calculator does not price permeable paving; use it only for a separately identified drainage component, and obtain a paving proposal for the whole build-up.
A homeowner can compare drawings and watch existing runoff. Before excavation, follow state 811 notification and response instructions and ask the local stormwater office which approvals apply to the proposed pavement and outlet.
Keep sediment out after installation
Plan how nearby soil will stay out of the joints during landscaping. Philadelphia’s manual warns that soil repeatedly driven into the surface can clog it, and calls for maintenance access to the drainage system; ask the installer for the chosen product’s cleaning method and handover plan.
Record the outlet and any inspection points before they are covered. EPA’s general permeable-pavement overview explains the mechanism, but is marked as no longer updated; use current local and manufacturer details for the actual construction.
If the surface choice includes synthetic grass, compare the turf backing and base drainage plan. For paving above a sealed layer, review outdoor drainage mat applications with the assembly designer; a drainage layer and an infiltration reservoir serve different roles.
Frequently asked questions
Are ordinary pavers automatically permeable?
No. Ask for the specified permeable joint or opening system and the drainage layers beneath it. The appearance of separate paving blocks does not establish how the whole pavement handles water.
Can permeable pavers work where soil drains slowly?
They may need a designed underdrain or other outlet instead of relying on infiltration alone. Have the soil and complete discharge route assessed before ordering the paving.
Do permeable pavers replace a channel drain?
They can address runoff where it falls on the permeable area. A channel drain may still be needed to intercept other incoming surface water or serve retained sealed paving.
Does the calculator include permeable paving?
No. It estimates listed drainage components, not a complete permeable driveway. Ask for separate excavation, paving, drainage-layer and restoration scope.
