Artificial turf drainage system: base and outlet

How does an artificial turf drainage system work?

An artificial turf drainage system works only if water can pass through the backing and base, then soak into suitable ground or reach a planned outlet. As of Nov 2026, manufacturer guidance supports drainable aggregate, with drainage cells or pipes where the surface and ground require them.

Evidence: SYNLawn; ForeverLawn / K9Grass; K9Grass Australia. Researched Nov 4, 2026; original rate-source dates are listed below.

Read the backing and infill specification

The backing is the underside holding the synthetic grass fibers; infill sits between the blades. SYNLawn describes perforated holes and fully permeable backing as ways water passes through turf. Infill and a backing opening perform different jobs; a label saying “draining turf” does not describe the ground beneath it.

K9Grass describes its knitted backing and infill-free pet turf. That is a product design, not a reason to remove infill from a different manufacturer’s system. Ask for the chosen turf’s backing, infill and pet-cleaning instructions together.

For a dog run, tell the installer where rinse water must go and which surfaces surround the turf. A pet-use proposal should explain how liquid leaves the base and how you can clean the finished surface; an odor-control infill claim does not answer either question.

Choose a base that stays drainable

ForeverLawn’s aggregate-base instructions call for a firm, porous stone base and warn that excessive fine material can stop drainage. Ask the installer to name each proposed layer and explain its purpose before covering the excavation.

The build-up should distinguish prepared ground, any specified separation layer, drainable aggregate and the turf. A decorative finishing layer or weed sheet is not evidence that water can leave the base. The product instructions should determine which layers belong in that assembly.

If the problem is still a natural lawn, use lawn drainage diagnosis before choosing synthetic grass. Replacing living grass changes the surface; it does not establish that the receiving soil can absorb runoff.

K9Grass Australia’s DrainPro example places a drain cell over concrete to carry water beneath turf. It illustrates a lateral route, not a universal requirement for every lawn. Match the mat to the turf installation and the existing surface.

For the outdoor layer itself, see drainage mat selection. SYNLawn’s drainage overview also discusses subsurface drainage infrastructure; pipe layout and discharge still need a project-specific design.

Compare the drainage work in turf quotes

Compare turf removal, excavation, aggregate supply and compaction, edging, drain cells, pipe routing and outlet work as separate scope items. Ask whether lifting existing turf, disposal, restoring nearby paving and pet-cleaning provisions are included. This is a comparison checklist, not a published price range.

Before any excavation, follow your state’s 811 notification process and check local outlet approvals. Have a turf installer and drainage contractor coordinate when the base or discharge route needs redesign; a homeowner can record puddles without specifying buried pipe sizes.

Photograph layers and outlets before the turf is laid, and request the product care instructions. Compare permeable paving if the choice is still between outdoor surfaces. The calculator can model separate grading or drain work, but it has no complete synthetic-turf installation price.

Frequently asked questions

Does artificial turf need a drain pipe underneath?

It depends on the ground and outlet. A drainable base over suitable soil may infiltrate water; an unsuitable receiving layer may need designed collection and an approved outlet.

Is perforated backing the same as infill?

No. Perforations are openings through the backing; infill sits between the grass blades. Ask for the selected product’s complete assembly instructions.

Can artificial turf drain over concrete?

It can if the assembly provides a lateral route to a working outlet. K9Grass Australia shows a drainage-cell example over concrete; the chosen turf system still needs compatible detailing.

Does the calculator price a complete pet-turf system?

No. It estimates separate modeled drainage or grading work. Turf, pet-use features and drainage mats need their own written scope.
