French Drain INSTALLATION COST

Lawn drainage: soil or pipe?

Will aeration improve lawn drainage?

It depends on the cause: core aeration can help compacted lawn soil, but it cannot resolve every saturated site. As of Nov 2026, University of Maryland Extension recommends addressing compaction while recognizing that persistently wet ground may suit different planting rather than turf. Check whether runoff, a low spot or restricted soil drainage is the actual problem.

Choose turf repair only when the soil is the bottleneck

Maryland Extension explains how core removal improves air and water movement in compacted soil. It does not provide a collector or reshape a low spot.

Compare worn paths and equipment tracks with less-trafficked grass. Record where water enters during rain and whether the wet patch receives downspout discharge. If the symptom is unexplained, start with the standing-water diagnosis before buying an aeration package.

Do not substitute a bottle for a soil assessment

Iowa State Extension does not consider liquid aeration a proven replacement for core aeration. Ask what the treatment changes before paying for a drainage cure.

Use regional guidance for your turf and season; Maryland’s calendar is not nationwide. Keep traffic off wet soil or compaction can continue.

Decide when the lawn needs a drainage contractor

Observe surface flow before choosing treatment. Get a site assessment for excavation, grade changes or an uncertain outlet; use the utility-marking and approval checks.

If the proposal changes the slope, compare yard regrading with turf-only work. Ask the quote to separate soil preparation, removal or reuse of sod, finished levels and restoration; a single “drainage repair” line does not distinguish those jobs.

Compare the patch under similar rain. If water still arrives from elsewhere, reassess its route before repeating treatment. Use the regrading cost guide if earthmoving is proposed.

Frequently asked questions

Can core aeration replace a French drain?

Only when compaction is the problem the work needs to address. Aeration changes soil conditions; a French drain collects and conveys water to an outlet.

Should I add sand to a wet lawn?

Do not choose a soil amendment from the puddle alone. Ask an extension service or soil specialist to assess the soil and the intended turf treatment.

Will liquid aeration cure poor lawn drainage?

Iowa State Extension does not consider liquid aeration a proven replacement for core aeration to reduce compaction. It does not create a discharge route.

When should I stop trying to grow grass?

Consider suitable alternative planting when the site remains too wet for turf. Maryland Extension explicitly notes that aeration alone cannot solve soil saturation.
