Channel drains for driveways and patios

A grated channel intercepts surface runoff along a line. Its location, load rating and outlet matter more than the grate’s appearance.

When do I need a channel drain?

A grated channel intercepts surface runoff along a line. Its location, load rating and outlet matter more than the grate’s appearance.

Intercept water before the threshold

A channel can collect runoff crossing a driveway or patio before it reaches a garage door or low opening. Confirm the surface actually slopes toward the grate. A channel set above the surrounding pavement cannot reliably receive water, and one without a suitable outlet only relocates the puddle.

Specify the whole assembly

Ask for the channel and grate product, intended vehicle or pedestrian loading, pipe connection and installation detail. Concrete support and pavement reinstatement depend on the chosen product and use. An installer should follow manufacturer instructions rather than treating a lightweight landscape channel as interchangeable with a vehicle-rated assembly.

Understand the price unit

Driveway channel drain assembly costs $400–$1,200 each nationally (as of Oct 2026). Quantity, ground, access and the outlet move the price.

The rate below is a published planning allowance for one single-car driveway assembly roughly 10–12 feet long. It is not a universal price for every channel length. A wide driveway, long patio edge, extensive concrete cutting or a new outlet needs its own measured scope.

Count assemblies only when they match that allowance.

Keep the grate serviceable

Confirm the grate can be removed and the channel cleaned. Sediment, leaves and ice can limit intake. Ask where water goes if a storm exceeds the design capacity, especially beside a garage.

Request a drawing of pipe routing and pavement repair before construction.

Nonwoven fabric keeps soil out of the gravel so the drain doesn't clog.

Washed gravel around the pipe lets water reach it from every side.

Water rises into the holes and runs along the pipe, which slopes toward the outlet.
Questions to ask before work starts
Is a channel drain a French drain?
No. A channel receives surface runoff through a grate; a French drain collects subsurface water through a permeable trench.
Can the outlet connect anywhere?
No. The installer must verify elevations, capacity and local discharge requirements. A convenient nearby pipe is not proof of a suitable connection.
