Retaining wall drainage: plan where water goes

What does a landscape retaining wall need for drainage?

A landscape retaining wall needs surface runoff kept away and a designed path for water behind the wall to reach an outlet. As of Nov 2026, Allan Block distinguishes its wall-rock and toe-drain system for incidental water from the separate management of concentrated runoff and groundwater.

Keep uphill runoff out of the wall

Trace roof water, driveway runoff and irrigation above the proposed wall. A drain behind the blocks should not become the default destination for these flows; Allan Block’s water-management tech sheet calls for surface water to be directed around the retained soil.

Use swale drainage planning or the drainage berm guide to understand a possible surface diversion. The wall designer must decide how that route fits the wall; moving water to its far end without a receiving path is unfinished drainage.

Separate the drain layer from the outlet

DetailPurposeQuestion to resolve
Surface diversionKeep concentrated runoff out of the retained soil.Where will the diverted water finish?
Wall drainage zoneCollect incidental water within the specified wall system. What material and soil-separation detail does this wall require?
Drain outletRelease collected water along the designed route.Where is the outlet, and how will it stay identifiable and open?

The Allan Block residential guide is product-specific. Do not copy its drain detail into a different wall system without the manufacturer’s instructions and project design.

Know when the wall designer must take over

Groundwater encountered during construction needs engineer review under Allan Block’s guidance. Ask for a licensed engineer familiar with the wall and its soils when water conditions differ from the design; a contractor’s promise to add more gravel does not resolve that change.

This is a drainage-scope guide for landscape walls. Structural design, movement, cracking and rebuilding require the wall’s qualified designer; do not excavate behind an existing wall or drill drainage openings based on a generic yard-drain detail.

Compare drainage scope before backfilling

Compare surface diversion, wall drainage materials, pipe, outlets, excavation and landscape repair as separate parts of the proposal. Ask who verifies the drainage before backfilling and who records changes; a line reading “drainage included” cannot show whether uphill runoff was considered.

Request photographs of the buried arrangement and a drawing of accessible outlets. For new digging, confirm 811 notification and utility responses and local approvals before work begins; utility markings do not determine whether the wall design is suitable.

The calculator can model a related grading component, not retaining wall construction or a complete wall drainage package. Compare that limited allowance with the yard regrading cost guide, then obtain the wall-specific scope separately.

If the wall proposal includes a drainage board, use the drainage mat guide to check fabric, joints and collector connections. The product must fit the wall design; adding a sheet is not permission to remove specified wall stone.

Frequently asked questions

Is a toe drain enough for all water behind a retaining wall?

No. Allan Block describes its toe drain and wall rock as handling incidental water. Concentrated surface runoff and groundwater need to be addressed in the wall’s water-management design.

Can I copy a French drain detail behind an existing wall?

Do not use a generic yard collector detail as a wall repair design. Have the wall designer assess the drainage and excavation before disturbing the retained soil.

What if groundwater appears while the wall is being built?

Allan Block’s residential guide says to consult an engineer so groundwater is accounted for in the design. Review the changed water conditions before continuing with the original drainage detail.

Will the calculator price retaining wall drainage?

No. It can estimate a related listed drainage or grading component. Wall construction, engineering and the wall-specific drainage assembly need their own proposal.
