French Drain INSTALLATION COST

Swale drainage: cost and when it beats a French drain

When is a drainage swale better than a French drain?

A swale suits surface runoff when a shallow open channel can reach a safe outlet; a French drain collects water below ground. The grading allowance as of Nov 2026 is $0.40–$2 per square foot, excluding fill, topsoil and sod. That is a grading component, not a complete swale installation price.

A swale carries water across the surface

A drainage swale is a broad, shallow channel, usually protected by grass or stone. Its purpose is to guide runoff along an intentional surface route; it is a poor substitute for a subsurface collector when the main problem is wet soil below the lawn.

Choose by water path, not by appearance
ChoiceGood fitTradeoff
Grass swaleAn open lawn route for surface runoff.Needs space, vegetation and an uninterrupted channel.
Stone-lined swaleA route where grass protection is unsuitable.Stone placement and erosion protection need a defined scope.
French drainSubsurface collection where buried conveyance fits.Needs suitable collector materials and an outlet that can receive the water.

The conservation district’s runoff guide describes grass and stone protection; its swale definition emphasizes shallow shape and gentle sides. A narrow trench left bare is not an equivalent finished swale.

What changes the swale quote?

Ask for the shaped area, excavation and spoil handling, imported material, grass or stone lining, inlet and outlet protection, and restoration. Access and the route’s existing grade change the work; a per-foot price without width and finishing scope is hard to compare.

Use yard regrading costs only as a starting component. This calculator has no complete swale job rate: stone lining, design and any underdrain need separate quotes, so the grading allowance should not be presented as an installed swale price.

Preserve the route and receiving area

Ask what happens where the swale reaches a path, fence or driveway, and where overflow travels if the channel cannot carry the inflow. A swale that simply ends at a low boundary can transfer the ponding problem to the next property.

If runoff is coming only from a roof, a better gutter outlet may be enough. If you are unsure whether the problem is surface flow or persistent saturation, use the standing-water diagnosis guide before choosing construction.

A homeowner can keep an existing channel clear and observe its flow. For a new route, changed elevations or excavation near utilities, confirm permit and 811 requirements and have the drainage route assessed; include stabilization and the finished elevations in competing quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a swale just a ditch?

It is a deliberately shaped shallow channel with protected sides and a suitable receiving outlet. The shape and stabilization distinguish a useful drainage route from an eroding excavation.

Can a swale work in clay soil?

A conveyance swale can carry surface water to a suitable outlet without relying on infiltration alone. If the design also expects water to soak away, have that soil function checked separately.

Can I fill an existing swale to flatten my lawn?

Check its drainage function and any local restrictions first. Filling it may interrupt an established runoff route; ask the stormwater office before changing the grade.

Does the calculator price a complete swale?

No. It can estimate the regrading component. Request a separate quote for the complete shaped channel, lining, erosion protection and any additional drainage work.
