Pool deck drainage: fix ponding and plan discharge
How do you fix water pooling on a pool deck?
Fix pool deck ponding by giving surface water a continuous fall to a serviceable deck drain and a suitable outlet; cleaning helps only when blockage is the cause. As of Nov 2026, NDS details show deck channels beside pool coping, while official guidance treats chemically treated pool discharge separately.

Find the puddle before choosing a drain
Watch where rain first collects and where it tries to leave. Photograph a puddle beside the pool edge, across a walkway or at a drain. Ask an installer to check finished deck elevations and the downstream route before selecting a wider grate.
NDS’s pool-deck installation drawing shows a supported channel beside the pool coping. Use the selected product and local pool/deck requirements for the finished slope.
A clean drain cannot collect water stranded below its inlet. If the deck pitches into a depression or toward an unwanted edge, ask for a grade-correction assessment. If debris blocks the intended opening, start with channel drain cleaning and inspection.
Georgia’s public-pool guidance illustrates the drainage principle: decks slope to perimeter areas or drains without leaving standing water. It does not establish the requirements for a private residential pool; confirm those with your local building office.
Choose a deck or strip drain that can be serviced
| Observation | Scope to assess | Question for the installer |
|---|---|---|
| Water follows a long edge | A deck or strip channel intercepting that route. | Will the deck actually fall to the opening? |
| A localized low point | An area inlet or correction of the depression. | Will water elsewhere still be stranded? |
| Water reaches the inlet but backs up | Channel, pipe and outlet inspection. | Where is flow restricted downstream? |
NDS’s pool-deck guide distinguishes area inlets and slim channels with connected pipes. A strip drain is the elongated collection opening around paving; it does not create the receiving outlet by itself.
Request a removable cover or identified service-access method before approving a replacement. NDS’s drawing includes the grate, concrete support and expansion joint; have the installer show how the selected detail fits the existing deck. The channel-drain guide covers the underlying collection system.
Separate deck runoff from pool emptying
Identify whether the water is rainfall on the deck, splash-out, filter wash water or water from emptying the pool. Do not assume a stormwater deck drain is approved for all of them. EPA’s chemically treated water guidance explains why pool water can harm receiving waters and describes alternative disposal options.
Portland’s pool-draining guidance prioritizes sanitary sewer or on-site infiltration, with conditions for alternatives. That is a local example, not permission elsewhere. Check your city and wastewater utility about treatment, testing and the acceptable route before emptying a pool.
Tell the authority if the pool uses salt treatment or if cleaning chemicals are involved. An inlet that works hydraulically can still lead to the wrong receiving system; ask the pool contractor to keep the disposal plan distinct from ordinary deck-runoff design.
Compare a clear-out with deck reconstruction
Cleaning is the smaller job when an otherwise sound collection route is obstructed. Replacing an embedded strip, changing deck falls or moving an outlet adds demolition and reinstatement. Compare those items separately in proposals so a drain replacement does not conceal an unresolved low spot.
For the priced channel component, use channel drain costs. Request separate allowances for saw cutting, matching the deck finish, pool-edge work, pipe replacement and disposal. No complete pool-deck reconstruction rate is modeled here.
Have a qualified pool/deck contractor assess cutting near pool services and the shell. Follow 811 instructions before new digging; ask how private pool lines and wiring will be located. At handover, check the approved runoff route and inspect for ponding when rain returns.
Frequently asked questions
Will a bigger pool deck drain fix a low spot?
Only if water can reach it and its outlet can accept flow. A depression below the inlet may need deck-grade correction rather than a wider grate.
Is a pool deck strip drain a channel drain?
Yes, it is a slim surface-collection channel used in deck paving. Choose a compatible installation and a way to access it for maintenance.
Can I empty my pool through the deck drain?
Check your city and wastewater utility first. Chemically treated pool water has separate disposal requirements; approval for rain runoff does not establish approval for emptying the pool.
Can a pool deck drainage quote exclude resurfacing?
Yes. Ask explicitly about demolition, surface matching, pool-edge work and reinstatement. A channel component estimate does not price a complete deck rebuild.
