French drain vs trench drain
Should I choose a French drain or a trench drain?
It depends on where the water is: a French drain collects through a buried drainage assembly; a grated trench or channel drain intercepts surface runoff at a paved edge or crossing. As of Nov 2026, manufacturer guidance treats the collector, connecting pipe and outlet as a complete route. Neither option works simply because a trench has been dug.

Choose the entry point before the product
Here, “trench drain” means a grated surface channel. Both systems involve trenches; ask the contractor to identify water entry and discharge rather than relying on names.
A soggy planted area and water crossing a driveway present different collection tasks. Start with the channel drain explanation for a grated paved-surface inlet, or yard French drain suitability for a buried collector.
Compare collection, access and restoration
| Decision | French drain | Grated trench/channel drain |
|---|---|---|
| Water entry | Through the specified buried collection zone | Through a surface grate where runoff reaches it. |
| Typical question | Can soil water reach this collector? | Will the pavement send runoff across the grate? |
| Traffic | Do not assume a buried product is vehicle-rated | Match channel, grate and installation support to actual loading. |
| Upkeep | Inspect accessible collector/outlet points | Keep grate and channel accessible for debris removal. |
| Restoration | Trench backfill and landscape reinstatement | May involve concrete or paving cutting and reinstatement. |
Read the installation detail for the actual surface
NDS’s driveway instructions specify placement, grate fastening and outlet connections. “Plastic trench drain” does not identify the support required beneath vehicle traffic.
NDS’s EZflow collector has different limitations. A channel drain’s driveway application does not establish that another drainage product supports the same traffic.
Know when neither option is the first fix
A downspout dumping beside the paving may need its own controlled route; compare where gutters should drain before cutting the driveway. A general low spot may need grading rather than an inlet installed where water cannot reach it.
Both proposals must identify the outlet. An impressive grate cannot correct a downstream pipe with no useful fall or an unsuitable receiving point. NDS’s driveway example specifically requires the outlet to be lower than the water entry.
A homeowner can observe flow and clear accessible debris. Cutting paving, setting levels and choosing a traffic-bearing assembly call for an assessed installation scope. Compare channel-drain costs with the French drain cost guide using the same restoration and outlet assumptions.
Require a sketch of collection, conveyance and discharge. Runoff bypassing a clear grate calls for a placement or grading review.
Frequently asked questions
Is a French drain a type of trench drain?
Both involve excavation, but contractors often use trench drain to mean a grated surface channel. Specify the water-entry arrangement rather than relying on the label.
Which drain belongs across a driveway?
A surface channel may intercept runoff crossing the pavement. Its channel, grate and surrounding support must suit the loading and manufacturer instructions.
Will a channel drain dry out saturated soil?
It collects water that reaches its surface inlet. Do not assume it performs the same soil-water collection task as a buried French drain.
Can both be part of the same project?
They may address different collection areas, provided the connecting route and outlet are designed for the combined water. Do not assume an existing pipe can accept an added inlet.
