What determines exterior drain tile cost?
Exterior footing drain costs $30–$90 per ft, as of Oct 2026 nationally for the published package scope. Quantity, access, surface and the outlet move the price.

- Collect the waterA trench lined with filter fabric holds clean gravel and a perforated pipe. Water in soggy soil seeps into the gravel and pipe.
- Keep roof water separateDownspout water runs in its own solid pipe so it doesn't overload the drain.
- Let it out at lower groundThe pipe slopes to an outlet, here a pop-up emitter. A pro checks that the outlet can take the water.
Define the length of exterior wall being priced
Exterior drain tile cost starts with the length of the outside drain, but the scope must say which walls are included. Ask each bidder to mark the same wall sections and identify where the pipe starts, turns and reaches its outlet. The house perimeter is not automatically the quantity that needs work.
A proposal for a wet wall on one side cannot be compared directly with drainage around the whole building. Keep the agreed length with the quote, and ask how the price will change if the route or exposed wall area changes after inspection.
Separate pipe installation from other foundation work
The published footing-drain rate covers exterior drainage pipe and excludes wall waterproofing and structural repair. Those exclusions matter when comparing a drainage estimate with a proposal to excavate and treat the wall. Ask for distinct descriptions of pipe work, wall preparation, waterproofing, repair and reinstatement.
Do not assume that an exterior drain tile price includes every item made accessible by the excavation. A contractor may recommend additional work, but its purpose and price should remain visible. This page absorbs the foundation drainage cost intent; it does not publish a separate foundation repair budget.
Explain excavation and access allowances
A narrow side yard, attached steps, paving and planting can change the work needed to reach the foundation. Ask the contractor to identify those constraints during the site visit. The calculator's access and surface factors are planning adjustments, not a schedule of prices for every obstruction.
A quote may need an approach that the planning example cannot describe. Have the contractor explain the work sequence and what reinstatement is included. If a proposal leaves a risk allowance for concealed conditions, ask how discoveries will be documented and agreed before extra work is charged.
Confirm whether discharge is included
A footing drain needs a suitable destination for the collected water. The base example does not buy a new outlet, and it does not prove that an existing connection works. Ask which outlet the quote relies on, how it will be checked and whether permission is needed.
A drain that depends on separate discharge work should not be compared with a complete proposal as though both prices cover the same result. If additional equipment is needed, have its scope assessed separately. Interior waterproofing work belongs to the linked waterproofing site rather than this exterior pipe rate.
Budget for the finish around the wall
The ground above the drain may include beds, paths or other surfaces that have to be removed and reinstated. Ask what the site will look like at completion. A backfilled excavation is different from restored paving and planting.
Keep disposal, surface repair and access damage in the quote discussion, and distinguish them from the selected lawn-restoration option in a planning estimate. Retain photographs of the route and wall before it is covered. That record helps explain the completed scope and gives future maintenance work a starting point without inventing a repair allowance today.
Prices by quantity
Exterior footing drain costs $30–$90 per ft, as of Oct 2026 nationally for the published package scope. Quantity, ground, access and the outlet move the price.
The range above is based on published rates, not a measured local average. Check what is included before comparing a contractor's proposal.
| Length | Range | Typical* |
|---|---|---|
| 25 ft | $630–$2,590 | $1,500 |
| 50 ft | $1,270–$5,180 | $3,000 |
| 100 ft | $2,550–$10,350 | $6,000 |
*Typical is the midpoint of the published low and high rate. Ranges by length include ±15% for the measured length. Examples use open lawn access, known flat terrain and high confidence, with no new outlet or lawn restoration.
Local labor is unadjusted. Quantities illustrate the model; they are not design recommendations.
A worked planning example
For 50 ft on that same basis, the example comes to low $1,270, typical $3,000 and high $5,180, as of Oct 2026.
- Exterior footing drain — $1,270–$5,180, typical $3,000
New outlet: – (excluded). Lawn restoration: – (excluded). Those exclusions do not mean that either item is free.
Confirm an existing outlet before relying on this basis; the example does not establish that your property has one.
What the price covers
In the price
- Exterior footing drain
- Work described by the published package scope
Added or excluded
- New outlet and lawn restoration unless selected
- Permits, engineering, utility relocation and structural repair
Exterior drainage pipe only; excludes wall waterproofing and structural repair.
Exterior drainage pipe only; excludes wall waterproofing and structural repair. The worked example isolates the selected job so you can compare the underlying scope. A different outlet, a disturbed lawn or difficult access can change the project.
Ask which parts of a proposed price are already included in the package before adding a separate allowance. Keep a marked route or work boundary with the quote so a later change can be priced against the same starting point.
The calculator adjusts for surface and access. A lawn route with open access is a different basis from work through paving or an area that must be dug by hand. Tell each bidder about narrow gates, steps, planting and surfaces that must remain.
An aerial image cannot confirm buried utilities, soil conditions or the condition of an existing outlet. Checking terrain on the map does not update the price; confirm the ground conditions in the calculator.
Permits, engineering, utility relocation, structural repair, taxes and unlisted work are excluded from these planning examples. Ask for those items explicitly if the job needs them. Imported fill, topsoil and sod are also outside the yard-regrading base rate.
A contractor's written scope should explain the finish, cleanup and any work left for you after the drainage installation. Missing items are a reason to ask a question, rather than a reason to assume that the lowest total is complete.
How should I compare written quotes?
Give each bidder the same job description, quantity and intended discharge arrangement. Ask for a breakdown that distinguishes the collection work, pipe route, outlet and surface repair. When a quote differs from the planning range, ask which site condition or scope item explains the difference.
The calculator is a reference for that conversation; it cannot establish a contractor's labor rate or guarantee a final price.
Check whether a package already includes the pipe or outfall being listed elsewhere in the proposal. A lower price may omit restoration or rely on an existing connection that has not been inspected. A higher price may include extra work that you actually need.
Compare those differences before negotiating the total. Have changes to the route, materials or finish written into the agreement so the accepted scope remains clear.
Ask when payments are due, who handles any required permission and how concealed conditions will be discussed before extra work proceeds. Keep product details and a record of the installed route at handover. This site currently relies only on a written agreement and service to your ZIP when identifying a contractor; it does not promise unverified licence or insurance checks.
