Dry well overflow

Why is my dry well overflowing?

It depends on whether water is blocked before the well, cannot infiltrate from it or exceeds what the system can receive. As of Nov 2026, Annapolis Public Works identifies clogged piping, gravel and filter material as possible causes of standing water and early overflow. Inspect the water path before assuming a larger chamber will fix it.

Find where the backup begins

Observe backup safely from the surface: note its location and whether it starts immediately or after runoff enters. That helps separate entry restrictions from receiving problems.

The dry well sizing and suitability guide explains a new installation. This page concerns an existing system that is not performing as expected. Keep covers secured; do not enter a chamber or excavate a saturated installation.

Remove the cause of repeated sediment entry

Annapolis advises clearing inflows and assessing clogged material. Use its local schedule alongside product instructions; it is not a universal maintenance timetable.

If runoff brings leaves or soil into the system, ask where they can be intercepted and removed before the well. Compare upstream basin maintenance if a sediment-catching inlet is already part of the route. A hidden filter that cannot be serviced is not a complete maintenance plan.

Know when rebuilding needs a new assessment

Fairfax County cautions against unsuitable soil or groundwater conditions. Require receiving-soil evidence before replacing the chamber; maintenance cannot change the groundwater setting.

For reconstruction, the EPA notes that some subsurface infiltration systems fall under its drainage-well program. Ask the relevant stormwater or permitting authority what applies to the proposed work; this guide does not decide a property’s regulatory status.

Compare the dry well installation scope and the cost guide only after the cause is understood. Separate inspection, removal of clogged material, excavation, soil assessment and surface restoration in the proposal.

Keep the overflow route in the assessment. Plugging its outlet hides the symptom without removing incoming water.

Frequently asked questions

Will a bigger dry well stop overflow?

Only if inadequate capacity is the established cause and the receiving soil and overflow route are suitable. A blockage or poor infiltration needs a different response.

Does overflow prove the inlet pipe is clogged?

No. Inspect the route and note where water first backs up. A well that cannot release water into the ground can also cause upstream backup.

Can I use the installation calculator for maintenance pricing?

The calculator models installation components. It does not provide a measured cleaning or dry-well rehabilitation rate; ask for an itemized proposal.

Should I seal the overflow outlet?

Have the intended excess-water route assessed before changing it. Hiding the outlet does not remove the incoming water or establish a safe receiving route.
