French drain pipes: perforated, corrugated or PVC?
Which pipe should I use for a French drain?
It depends on whether the pipe collects water or carries it away: use perforated pipe in the collection trench and solid pipe for conveyance. Corrugated describes the wall shape; PVC describes the material, and either choice must suit the route and installation specification (as of Nov 2026).
Evidence: ASTM International; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory / US Department of Energy. Researched Nov 2, 2026; original rate-source dates are listed below.
Compare the pipe, not just the name
“Perforated versus corrugated” is a false choice: a corrugated pipe can have openings. Ask for the exact product and whether each section collects water or only transports it; a pipe without openings cannot collect wet-soil water along its length.
| Option | Useful when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Perforated corrugated pipe | The collection route needs to bend around landscaping. | Wall construction, compatible couplings and support beneath bends. |
| Perforated smooth-wall PVC | The collection route can use rigid lengths and planned fittings. | Perforation pattern, joint specification and access for maintenance. |
| Solid conveyance pipe | Collected water must travel to a discharge point. | A continuous route to the outlet, with no unintended release near the house. |
ASTM’s public PVC underdrain abstract distinguishes perforated and nonperforated pipe; NDS’s EZ-Drain specification describes a slotted corrugated collector within its own aggregate-and-fabric assembly. Product instructions govern installation; the trade name alone does not specify the whole trench.
What does French drain pipe cost per foot?
HomeGuide’s pipe-only range is $1–$5+ per linear foot, as of Nov 2026. Its table lists corrugated pipe at $1–$3 and PVC at $1.20–$5 per foot. These are attributed material ranges, excluding trenching, stone, fabric, fittings and restoration.
Price evidence: HomeGuide, “French drain pipe costs,” accessed Nov 2, 2026. For the installed system, use the French drain installation cost guide; comparing a coil price with a completed trench quote hides most of the work.
What should the quote specify?
Ask the installer to mark the change from perforated collection pipe to solid outlet pipe on the route sketch. Require the product, bedding or proprietary surround, soil-separation fabric, fittings, cleanouts and lawn repair to be named; “drain pipe included” leaves too much open.
A surface extension may be enough if the wet patch comes only from a downspout. For a buried collector, settle the gravity or pumped outlet decision before buying pipe; changing plastic will not fix an outlet that cannot drain.
A homeowner can compare products and inspect accessible outlets. Excavation across utilities, paving or an uncertain discharge route needs a designed scope; review permit and 811 checks before digging.
Frequently asked questions
Is corrugated pipe always perforated?
No. Corrugated describes the wall profile. Check the product label for perforations or slots when you need a collector, and for solid construction when you need conveyance.
Should the holes face up or down?
Follow the selected pipe manufacturer’s instructions for its perforation pattern. A rule for rigid pipe with discrete holes may not describe a slotted corrugated product.
Can I bury a downspout extension as a French drain?
A solid downspout extension transports roof water; it does not collect water from the soil along the trench. Keep roof-water conveyance separate from a perforated foundation drain.
Will PVC fix a French drain that does not work?
Only if damaged or unsuitable pipe is the actual fault. Ask the installer to check the collector, elevations and outlet before approving replacement of the whole line.
